Flared Shorts

Very Chic but Comfy

Flared shorts are the perfect combination of style and comfort. They offer the chic appearance of a short skirt while ensuring the ease and practicality of shorts.

If you've ever hesitated to wear short skirts, these flared shorts are your ideal alternative. And the best part? They come equipped with pockets, adding a touch of functionality to the design.

This guide will explain how tomake the pattern and sew the shorts. If you don’t want to make the pattern yourself, you can access it on my Patreon and support me.

Written Guide

Step 1: Gathering Materials

Prepare all necessary items:

  • pair of well-fitting pants,
  • paper, tape, pencil, scissors/rotary cutter and pins
  • fabric (I used green viscose, you can use any flowy but not stretchy fabric you like)
  • 4 cm (1 1/2”) elastic (As long as your waist and with the ability to stretch to twice it’s length)

Step 2: Creating a Basic Pants Pattern

Spread out some paper and tape them together to form a large sheet.

Lay your pants on the paper, pinning them in place. Carefully trace the shape of your pants, marking the pockets.

Don’t forget to add seam allowance.

Step 3: Adjusting the Pattern for a Flared Design

On a fresh sheet of paper, trace the front piece of your pants pattern. Determine your desired shorts length and crop the pattern to that length. Straighten out the side seam.

Draw lines from the bottom and top edge towards the waistline and cut along the lines, leaving a very small spot where it holds together. Spread the pattern pieces apart (creating a 90° angle) to achieve the flared look.

Take the back piece and lengthen the waist, so the whole waist circumference of your shorts fits over your hips.

Step 4: Preparing and Cutting the Fabric

Wash and press your chosen fabric to ensure it won’t shrink afterwards.

Align the pattern's side seam and front/back seam with the fabric's grain line. Pin the pattern onto the fabric, staying within the seam allowance.

Using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter, cut out two front pieces, two back pieces, the waistband and the pockets.

Step 5: Crafting the Pockets

Cut a round corner for the pocket opening out of the front pieces and the pocket pieces.

Sew the pocket piece right sides facing each other to the front piece along the curve. Flip it around, press and top stitch.

Close up the bottom edge of the pocket with a French seam and secure the pocket in place on the waist and the side seam.

Step 6: Assembling the pant legs

Take a front piece and a back piece, placing them right sides together.

Sew along the side seams and the inner leg seams using a straight stitch.

For a polished finish, use an overlock or zigzag stitch to finish the seams.T urn one of the sewn pieces inside out and the other one right side out.

Place one inside the other and make sure that they are right sides facing each other.

Stitch them together along the curved crotch area.

Step 7: Crafting and Attaching the Waistband

Fold one edge of the waistband inward by about 1 cm (1/2”) and press firmly. Close up the waistband to form a continuous piece. Sew it on the waist of the shorts.

Fold in the waistband and sew it down to create a 4 cm (1 1/2”) wide channel, leaving a gap to insert the elastic into the waistband. Adjusting the elastic to fit snugly around your waist.

This will ensure the shorts fit comfortably without being too tight. Close up the opening. Position the elastic in a way that the back is gathered, but the front is not. Secure the elastic in place above the side seam.

Step 8: Hemming the Shorts

Begin by pressing the edges of the shorts. Fold the edges over twice by 5 mm (1/4”) to create a clean hem.

Sew along the hem, taking care not to stretch the fabric, ensuring a straight and even hem.
